Training
I trained as a dental surgeon at Bristol University and as a medical doctor at Cambridge University. I completed a foundation surgical training programme in a range of surgical specialties, followed by a UK Higher Surgical Training programme of five years in oral and maxillofacial surgery.

I studied Dentistry at Bristol University (BDS 1984) and read Medicine at Cambridge University (MBBChir 1992). I obtained Higher Surgical Fellowships from the Royal College of Surgeons of England in Dental/Oral Surgery (FDSRCS) in 1988, in Surgery in General (FRCS) in 1994 and in Maxillofacial Surgery (FRCS) in 1999. I was also awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal College of Surgeons. In 2006 I gained the Degree of Master of Surgery (MChir) from Cambridge University for research into flap techniques used in oral reconstruction. In 2015 I was awarded the Degree of Doctor of Medicine (MD) for research on reducing the morbidity associated with major head and neck cancer and reconstructive surgery.
